Which Forum Script?
Hi guys,
Slightly offtopic, but I'm starting a new board, and want to know why you guys chose myBB over phpBB 3. Also, is this easily exportable to VB? I'd like to have the itrader/rep sysytem from vb; which one should I go for. Thanks, and forgive me for me noobiness; no experience with forums before. anions |

RE: Which Forum Script?
I dont like phpbb at all so that is one reason why we chose mybb. Firstly phpbb 2 has lots of spam botters getting past the captcha, when a forum board becomes so popular there are bound to have lots of hackers etc working to attack the boards.
2nd myBB gives the same feel as vB. I think there is a free conversion software from mybb to vB. As for itrader, mybb on our current board uses Reputation, you can turn that around to become the iTrader. Overall I prefer myBB over phpbb

RE: Which Forum Script?
I hear phpbb 3 has much better captcha protection than phpbb2.

RE: Which Forum Script?
It does, but it still has a very poor user interface, and the installation of the Akismet and "Extra protection" plugins for MyBB make it even more secure.
MyBB has personal support, is much easier to code plugins (even thoug PhpBB 3 finally implemented hooks) and themes for - and I do both systems, and have to work with them both on a very regular occassion. Plus, as a beta tester for MyBB 1.4, all I can say is with the new features it is IMO better even than vB. Cheers, BP |

RE: Which Forum Script?
But what about SEO for both forum boards? We all know the vBSEO is the best forum SEO plugin around. Does phpbb3 or myBB has a better or on par SEO plugin as VB SEO?

RE: Which Forum Script?
VBSeo does very, very little to your search engine rankings - the actual URLs of your board do absolutely nothing for search engines - they will index your site anyway regardless of so called "SEO" techniques.
The best way to help with search engine indexing to make clean code with a strict doctype. And for almost the cost of a vBulletin script, and the little it actually does do, it is not worth it. What people fail to understand is that in essentials, SEO is just a lot of good ideas, taken to zealous extremes by click-through link whores who can't be bothered to have content of value on their site. If you promote enough, and have good content with easily parseable code - that is all you need to optimize for search engines. Not fancy mod_rewrites (which just slows down ping time) or URL titles/replacements. BP |

RE: Which Forum Script?
You have got a point about the uniqueness of the content of the site. Google can tell if the content is worthless and then it won't be ranked high. If you do use vBSEO It might tend to help alittle but sites that i tend see with vBSEO are never ranked high

RE: Which Forum Script?
Thanks for the informative post BP, you and Swank have convinced me, and I'm looking around for decent themes now.
@Jag100 - Do you always have to jump in even if you have nothing to contribute to the thread; your post makes no sense and has nothing to do with what blueparukia said. |

anions Wrote:Thanks for the informative post BP, you and Swank have convinced me, and I'm looking around for decent themes now. Yes I'm lazy okay but it is true as I know google checks for duplicates. The only reason that the post does not contribute to the thread because I'm making a point to swank because we might be moving to vB. If you want my opinion then go for MyBB okay it's fast and easy to manage. You can find a great selection of plugins and themes for it and if you can't find any you need it's easy to create them.Hope that helps Need Help or Got a Question - Post It In "Forum Support & Suggestions" - DO NOT PM ME |

RE: Which Forum Script?
So I bought the domain http://dp2.info
Installed myBB - no hassles. Admin CP is great, overall myBB looks like the perfect choice. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Now I'm looking for a decent theme - I tried a few, but most dont work with the latest version 1.2.12. Any suggestions for themes? |
