40% drop in traffic after switching scripts
So summer saw a drop in traffic but every weekday I was doing about 20 gigs on this one server. Then last night I changed scripts because myspace wasn't working. I switched the script on four domains and suddenly my mrtg at the webhost showed a massive drop in traffic, almost as if it was the weekend. I was actually expecting a boost!
What is also bizzare is that I made two mistakes while conducting this upgrade, one I forgot to install my proxied popup code and two I forgot to block China, Iran, India and Brazil using goip. So instead of shooting traffic sky high it halved it! According to vnstat Monday was 18 gigs and today, Tuesday, the traffic is estimated to be 9 gigs. Any ideas? |

RE: 40% drop in traffic after switching scripts
What script are you currently using? Can't tell exactly what the problem is with these details, would be good if you can post or send me your proxy url so I can take a look.

RE: 40% drop in traffic after switching scripts
Sorry I switched from happy proxy, which is a modded variant of phproxy I believe to the current stable glype 5.3.1 and the only other change I made, which isn't really a change, is that the geoip was dropped meaning people from all over the world could not access the proxy. I did see my load averages hit a couple of spikes this time but never was the CPU bogged down. I can't for the life of me think why this happened. It makes no sense unless happy was really really good at proxifying certain websites but glype doesn't measure up?

RE: 40% drop in traffic after switching scripts
I think the reason is that glype has a caching function (which is really cool), how about the earnings?

RE: 40% drop in traffic after switching scripts
Happy Proxy was a very badly designed PHProxy mod, it worked effectively for a couple months after its release but then it started getting abused and some of the features are quite CPU intensive. What you probably saw was just glype eliminating that abusive traffic and freeing up more resources on your server. That is to say, most of those werent real visitors in the first place and now it reflects your real visitor count.
You were definitely right to switch scripts though and you should see real visitors slowly build up now because glype is a much better script. |
